George G. Ellis, Jr. was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the oldest of 5 children. He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1974 and went on to get a Bachelor Degree in Biology and Chemistry from Youngstown State University. He received his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in 1985.

He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1989 and went on to complete his internship, residency, and chief residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
